wrightia

Wrightia religiosa or “sui mui, jelati or water jasmine” as it is locally known in Malaysia is commonly used as a garden plant.

Introducing “sui mui”

In the world of bonsai there are numerous plants you can use for bonsai. However, as far as bonsai styling is concerned, there are far and few plants that are as unique and versatile as the “sui mui.”

The leaves are small and occasionally blooming with small white scented flowers that filled air with a sweet aroma.

about Wrightia or “sui mui”

Wrightia, a native plant of south east Asia is a popular garden plant and commonly used for bonsai. It is very hardy, fast growing and highly adaptable to extreme conditions. It loves water which is why it is sometimes also known as “water jasmine.”

It has tree-like properties and when developed into a bonsai it looks like a miniaturised old tree. The leaves are small and occasionally blooming with small white scented flowers that filled air with a sweet aroma.

However, the most interesting attributes of all is, it can be used to create to almost any bonsai styles you can think of.

Browse through the following pages and discover how many styles you can create using Wrightia.

fancy style

Although there are many species of plants I use to create bonsai however, my personal favourite choice is Wrightia. I like it because with just one species of tree I can create various artistic and traditional styles.

On the right are some bonsai creation of different styles, shapes and sizes - from the world’s smallest bonsai (micro bonsai) of less that 1” in height to a large bonsai of 15 inch base trunk. Or some traditional or fancy artistic styles.

Or if you are creative and adventurous you can try some artistic bonsai like shapes of animals or dragon styles. I guess it is probably the only animal bonsai collection in the world. You can see more of it in the next following pages.
